Janine is a self-sufficient artist in every sense, extending her artistry beyond the music itself. She meticulously crafts her own visual narratives, from creating artwork to directing and editing music videos. She also engineers her own music, often opting to record in her closet over big studios.
Born in New Zealand, Janine dedicated herself to music almost as soon as she could walk, recording herself singing her favorite tunes on a double cassette player at the age of five. At the age of fourteen, she began performing her original songs with a guitar at open mics, mostly held at bars she wasn’t technically allowed into using her older sisters ID.
Under her original moniker, Janine and The Mixtape, the artist made quite a mark since since arriving stateside in 2011. Moving to New York, she quietly built a buzz, penning, producing, and recording the 2013’s independent “Dark Mind” EP. Following placements on VH1’s Black Ink Crew and Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta, it soared to #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and #2 on iTunes Top R&B/Soul Albums Chart. The single “Hold Me” reached the Top 10 on Spotify’s Global Viral Charts and #1 on iTunes New Zealand.
Tastemakers including Complex, VIBE, Billboard, MTV, and more acclaimed her sound. In 2015, she released “XXEP” and embarked on a nationwide tour of the US, opening for the reunion of the world-renowned duo, Floetry. Her project “XXEP” went on to win “Best R&B Album” at the New Zealand Music Awards.
In 2018 she completed her first headlining US tour “Before It’s Too Late” and saw further success from the release of her debut album “99.” The album reached top 10 on the US iTunes R&B chart, charted on the overall US iTunes Charts, #1 on the NZ Heatseekers Charts, #1 on the R&B Charts and #13 on the overall iTunes Chart. Her song “Unstable” from the album also featured on Starz “Power.”
Over the last few years Janine has been busy releasing singles and growing her audience independently. In 2023, a few years away from performing live, she returned to the stage in LA and sold out “The Troubadour.” A testament to her magnetic connection with her supporters, hundreds of fans waited to meet her after the show. Janine stayed for two hours after the performance, meeting fans and expressing her gratitude until she reached the end of the line.
The sold out show led to Janine working with world renowned booking agency WME and booking her first ever world tour which was nothing short of a triumph. Spanning 14 cities across three continents, the tour saw multiple sold-out shows around the world. From Auckland to Amsterdam and London to Los Angeles, Janine mesmerised audiences with her powerful energy, heartfelt performances and undeniable stage presence. Each night, fans sang along passionately, proving her music has touched hearts worldwide. Following the massive success of her debut world tour, Janine has been hard at work crafting her upcoming new album, set for release in 2025.
